چکیده

CABINS is a framework of modeling an optimization task in illstructured domains. In such domains, neither systems nor human experts possess the exact model for guiding optimization. And the user's model of optimality is subjective and situation-dependent. CABINS optimizes a solution through iterative revision using case-based reasoning. In CABINS, task structure analysis was adopted for creating an initial model of the optimization task. Generic vocabularies found in the analysis were specialized into case feature descriptions for application problems. Extensive experimentation on job shop scheduling problems has shown that CABINS can operationalize and improve the model through the accumulation of cases.

Improving System Performance in Case-Based Iterative Optimization through Knowledge Filtering

Adding knowledge to a knowledge-based system is not monotonically bene cial. We discuss and experimentally validate this observation in the context of CABINS, a system that learns control knowledge for iterative repair in ill-structured optimization problems. In CABINS, situation-dependent user's decisions that guide the repair process are captured in cases together with contextual problem info...

Interest-Focused Tutoring: A Tractable Approach to Modeling in Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Despite the progress made in the field of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), it is still a major challenge to build systems that can teach about complex, ill-structured domains. A chief reason is that detailed, dynamic modeling of students' knowledge is intractable in such areas, and complete, correct models of expert knowledge are inherently difficult to build. These difficulties have led som...

Involvement of right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in ill-structured design cognition: an fMRI study.

In ill-structured tasks, the problem to be solved is poorly specified and there is no unique correct solution. Most evidence on brain mechanisms involved in dealing with such tasks comes from neuropsychology. Here, we developed an ill-structured design task suitable for testing in a functional neuroimaging environment and compared it with a matched well-structured problem-solving task using fMR...

Developing informal reasoning skills in ill-structured environments. A case study into problem-solving strategies

The issue of teaching broad-based thinking processes, rather than more contentspecific skills, continues with the emphasis on the development of cognitive skills through the use of investigation, reflection and analysis, synthesis and evaluation to generate or refine knowledge. Such skills are more widely associated with the more complex (‘higher order’) learning strategies proposed by Bloom (1...
